Refrigerated display case repair
Display cases are built to show product and keep it cold at the same time, which is a hard trick. Open multideck cases rely on an air curtain blowing from top to bottom; deli, bakery and seafood cases fight lights, glass and warm shoppers. Self-contained cases carry their own compressor; in grocery stores most cases are fed from a remote rack in a machine room.
Most case repairs are fans, lights, controls, defrost and drains, typically $100 to $400 to $200 to $650. Problems on a remote rack-fed case may be at the case, in the piping or back at the rack.

Display case faults, by symptom
| What you see | Usual causes | Check before you call | Guide repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top shelves warm, bottom fine | Air curtain broken: product over the load line, blocked return grille, failed fan | Keep product behind the load line and off the return air grille at the front | $100 to $400 |
| Whole case warm | Iced coil, failed expansion valve or solenoid, rack or condenser fault | Check whether other cases on the same rack are warm too | $200 to $1,600 |
| Glass fogging or sweating | Anti-sweat heater failed, high store humidity | Note if it happens on humid days only | $150 to $500 |
| Water in the case or on the floor | Blocked drain, failed drain heater, cracked pan | Look under the case at the drain trap | $100 to $450 |
| Lights or night curtain not working | Driver, ballast or switch; curtain mechanism | Check the case breaker | $100 to $400 |
What a good display case repair covers
- Air temperatures checked at the discharge and return air grilles, not only the product.
- The load line and stocking checked with the department manager.
- On rack-fed cases, the case valves and the rack checked together.
- Refrigerant work by an EPA Section 608 certified technician, with the amount added logged for the leak rate.
- Drain traps cleaned so the next defrost does not flood the aisle.

Find a technicianHow a display case repair usually goes
Rope off or empty
Move high-risk product to a back-room cooler before the case is worked on.
Case or rack?
The technician checks whether the fault is in this case alone or shared by every case on the circuit.
Repair
Fans, controls and valves are replaced; leaks are found and repaired before recharge.
Restock to the line
Once it holds temperature, restock below the load line so the air curtain works.
Remote cases and the refrigerant rules
Supermarket systems hold large refrigerant charges, which is why the EPA watches them closely. From January 1, 2026, the EPA's leak repair rule under the AIM Act covers refrigeration holding 15 pounds or more of an HFC refrigerant such as R-404A. When refrigerant is added, the leak rate has to be worked out, and a commercial refrigeration system leaking more than 20% a year must be repaired within 30 days, with verification tests afterward (EPA fact sheet). Systems of 500 pounds or more need quarterly leak inspections until four quarters in a row come in under the threshold.
For new supermarket systems, the EPA's May 2026 rule sets an interim refrigerant global warming potential limit of 1,400 from January 1, 2027, tightening in 2032 (Federal Register). It also lets an existing supermarket system add up to 15 percent cooling capacity without being treated as a new installation, which matters when a store adds cases.
Questions people ask
Why is my open display case warm at the top?
Open cases depend on an air curtain. Product stacked past the load line or on the return grille, or a failed fan, breaks it, and the top shelves warm first.
How much does display case repair cost?
Fans, lights and controls usually cost $100 to $650 plus a service call of $75 to $250. Valve and refrigerant work runs higher.
What temperature should a deli case hold?
Cold-held deli food has to stay at 41°F or below under the FDA Food Code, so cases are set a few degrees colder to allow for lights and door or curtain losses.
Why does my case glass fog up?
Display glass has anti-sweat heaters that keep it above the dew point. When one fails, or the store is very humid, the glass sweats.
Can one technician fix both the case and the rack?
Usually yes. Commercial refrigeration technicians work on both, and a fault in one case often traces back to the rack or the piping.
