Walk-in freezer repair
A walk-in freezer works harder than a cooler and fails differently. It runs below 32°F, so the evaporator coil frosts all the time and depends on a timed defrost cycle: heaters, a timer or controller, a termination switch and a heated drain line. When any of those fail, the coil turns into a block of ice and the box warms up while the unit runs flat out.
Defrost and drain faults are usually repaired for $150 to $650. Compressor work on a low-temperature system costs more than on a cooler, because the compressors work at higher compression ratios and fail harder.

Walk-in freezer faults, by symptom
| What you see | Usual causes | Check before you call | Guide repair |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coil solid with ice | Failed defrost heater, timer, controller or termination switch; door left ajar | Check the door closes and the gasket seals; note how often the box goes into defrost | $150 to $650 |
| Ice on the floor or ceiling | Warm, moist air getting in: worn gasket, failed door frame heater, torn strip curtain, damaged panel joint | Paper slip test on the door; look for frost lines along panel seams | $50 to $200 and up |
| Water dripping, icicles under the coil | Frozen drain line, failed drain line heater | Look at the drain line where it leaves the box | $100 to $450 |
| Box at 10 to 20°F and rising | Iced coil, low refrigerant, condenser fault, failing compressor | Check the condenser is clear and its fan is turning | $150 to $12,000+ |
| Door frozen shut or hard to open | Frame heater failed, pressure relief port iced or blocked | Do not force it with a tool; call for service | $150 to $500 |
| Short cycling or tripping | Electrical component, low charge, overheating compressor | Note the times it trips; do not keep resetting | $150 to $700 |
What a good freezer repair covers
- A full defrost cycle checked, not just the part that failed: heaters, timer or controller, termination and drain heater.
- Door heaters and the pressure relief port checked while the technician is at the door.
- The coil fully cleared of ice before the box is loaded again.
- Refrigerant handled by an EPA Section 608 certified technician, and the amount added recorded.
- Advice on product: how long it was above 0°F and whether anything thawed.
What walk-in freezer repairs cost
| Job | Typical price |

| Service call and diagnosis Often credited toward the repair | $75 to $250 |
| Defrost heater, timer or termination switch Part and labor | $150 to $650 |
| Drain line heater Including clearing the drain | $100 to $450 |
| Door gasket Per door, fitted | $50 to $200 |
| Compressor, 1 to 2 ton system Low-temperature compressors sit toward the top | $600 to $3,000 |
| Large system, 3 to 5+ ton Multi-compressor or large boxes | $2,500 to $12,000+ |

Why freezers ice up from the outside in
Ice in a walk-in freezer is almost always moisture that came from outside: through an open or poorly sealed door, a torn strip curtain or a gap at a panel joint. Every time the door opens, warm kitchen air rushes in and its water freezes onto the coldest surface it finds, which is the evaporator coil. The defrost cycle is designed to clear normal frost, not a door that never closes.
That is why a freezer repair that only replaces a defrost heater, without looking at the door, often fails again within weeks. Check the door closer, the gasket, the frame heater and the strip curtain as part of the same visit.

Find a technicianHow a freezer repair usually goes
Protect the product
Keep the door shut and move high-value stock to another freezer or a reefer trailer if the box is above 10°F.
Defrost and diagnose
The coil is defrosted under control so the technician can test heaters, timer and termination and read pressures.
Repair
Defrost parts are usually stocked. Compressor work may need a return visit once the part arrives.
Pull-down
A freezer can take several hours to come back to temperature. Load it once it is at set point, not before.
Federal rules that touch a freezer repair
The FDA Food Code asks that frozen food be kept frozen; it does not set a freezer temperature, and most operators run walk-in freezers between 0°F and −10°F. From January 1, 2026, the EPA's leak repair rule under the AIM Act covers refrigeration holding 15 pounds or more of an HFC refrigerant such as R-404A. When refrigerant is added, the leak rate has to be worked out, and a commercial refrigeration system leaking more than 20% a year must be repaired within 30 days, with verification tests afterward (EPA fact sheet).
The Department of Energy regulates walk-in coolers and freezers with less than 3,000 square feet of storage, and its standards cover their doors, panels and refrigeration systems (DOE, Federal Register). A replacement refrigeration system is made to those standards; you do not have to certify anything yourself.
Questions people ask
Why is my walk-in freezer icing up?
Moist air is getting in and freezing on the coil, or the defrost system is not clearing normal frost. Check the door, gasket and strip curtain first; a failed defrost heater, timer or termination switch is the most common part failure.
What temperature should a walk-in freezer be?
Most operators set walk-in freezers between 0°F and −10°F. The FDA Food Code requires frozen food to be kept frozen and does not name a single number, so follow your local health department and the product supplier.
How much does walk-in freezer repair cost?
Defrost and drain repairs usually cost $150 to $650 plus the service call. Compressor replacement on a small system runs about $600 to $3,000, and larger systems $2,500 to $12,000+.
Is it safe to refreeze food that partly thawed?
Food that still has ice crystals or stayed at 41°F or below is generally safe to refreeze, though quality may suffer. Food that has been warmer than that for hours should be checked against your health department guidance before use.
Why is the freezer door hard to open after it closes?
Cold air shrinks as it cools and creates a slight vacuum inside. A pressure relief port lets air back in; if it is iced or its heater has failed, the door sticks. It is a quick repair.
